Employee Engagement

April 10, 2018

Whether you are trying to improve employee satisfaction scores, reduce turnover, improve production, implement strategy or reduce absence, this will only be achieved by having an engaged workforce.

So, what is employee engagement?

“Employee engagement is a fundamental concept in the effort to understand and describe, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the nature of the relationship between an organisation and its employees. An "engaged employee" is defined as one who is fully absorbed by and enthusiastic about their work and so takes positive action to further the organisation's reputation and interests. An engaged employee has a positive attitude towards the organisation and its values.”

So, what are your organisations current employee engagement levels?

Many organisations invest in employee opinion or employee satisfaction surveys/questionnaires.  This can be a valuable first step in gaining feedback from your workforce.  If designed correctly, these surveys can provide valuable information on current levels of engagement.

Conducting this type of exercise can also improve employees’ views of an organisation by providing them the opportunity to feed back their thoughts and ideas.  However, this is only the case if the process is transparent and visible action is taken following the results being published.

So, how can you improve employee engagement?

The key to maintaining an effective and engaged workforce is to provide them with a voice.

Highly effective organisations have processes in place to allow for ongoing conversations with employees to ensure their voice is heard.  This is a valuable step towards improving engagement through employees feeling listened to and heard.  Again, these processes need to be transparent so that employees can see how their views have been considered as part of the organisations decision making process.

Line managers also have a big impact on employee engagement, so investing in upskilling managers can also be a valuable exercise.

Coaching is a good approach for managers to reflect on their effectiveness and style and to support them to develop their managerial skills, thus improving their teams effectiveness and engagement with the organisation.
