The Real Truth

Time after time I've seen students' graduate University, excited about their future, enthusiastic about their next steps, whether it be moving to a new city, getting their dream job or moving onto further study.

However, over the years it has become apparent that the pressure on young people is increasing. Whether that be to decide what they want to do with their lives, find new places to live or start earning money to pay back their student debts.

In order to support students to be ready for life after University, I think a dose of reality is needed.

Think about it, during University, students' have support with their academic lives, how to find student accommodation, advice on money issues, support with campaigning etc. They also build up a strong support system with societies, committees and social interactions they have.

However, when they are suddenly free of academic life, their support system is suddenly depleted.

The first time they hear the word 'no' could be after their first job interview.

When they look for their first rental accommodation, do they know what to be aware of?

Do they know how to prepare and cook a meal?

I think it's important for HE providers to equip students' with knowledge and confidence in life skills before they leave University. This could contribute to reducing the pressure felt before graduating by ensuring that students' understand the reality they are about to face and to feel confident in tackling it head on with no fear.
